Meet the Pussycats – Tiki TimeBomb #3.2.1

Tick...tick....tick...BOOM!  Good things come in small packages and this package includes a speedy set of eight wheels and, some are convinced, a stealthy concealed turbo jet pack.  She is the current Captain of the Pussycats and a crowd favorite, so if you haven’t met Tiki Timebomb on the track, here is your chance to learn a bit more about one of the Faster Pussycats’ top secret weapons.

Name & number: Tiki TimeBomb #3.2.1
Position(s): Jammer/Blocker/Team Captain
Best quality: Ambitious
Worst quality: Tempestuous
Occupation: Computer Whisperer
Favorite Cat: Bucky Katt from the Get Fuzzy strip. We share a similar intolerance of idiocy, and a lust for fame surpassed only by our desire to eat a monkey. I'm kidding. I don't eat anything with eyelashes.

Commonly, when derby skaters are asked about what attracted them to the sport of Roller Derby, the answers usually consist of, “I love the personas” “Can’t get enough of the  hitting” or “Hello! It’s on roller-skates!”

However, when we asked our introspective library worker (who in her free time pursues the vocation of “dissecting computers and becoming a professional spy who thwarts cyberterrorism by studying computer forensics”) what drew her into the sport of derby, she answers, “the artwork.”

Tiki explains that her first encounter with the sport was when she noticed an impressive poster designed by current All-Star skater, Chica Bomb, promoting the second season of TCRG.  Tiki appreciated the artistry and, without hesitation, attended her first TCRG bout and inevitably fell in love.  It wasn’t just poster artwork anymore; she was now hooked by “the skaters, the speed, and the fans.”

Soon after, she attended a practice with a Lower Mainland league close to where she lived and, “borrowed a pair of skates that were a size too small and even though my toes felt like they were going to explode, it was like I'd found what was missing in my life.”

Tiki was surprised when she realized rockin’ the quad skates wasn’t as difficult as she had imagined, but attributes that to some previous skating experience.  “It wasn't hard to find my skate-legs because I secretly roller-bladed with my dog in high school, but only when I was sure I wouldn't run into any of my hardcore punk crew.” She laughs as she confesses, “it's amazing how much faster you can go when you aren't weighed down by a studded leather jacket and army pants.”

When asked if anything surprised her about the sport after she joined, she smiles, “You know the old saying, the bigger they are, the harder they fall?  Well, it turns out it's not just a lie your mom told you so you'd stop asking for magic tall pills for your birthday.”

Tiki never forgot about her first bout experience and after a little time with a local league, and a few good wipe outs, she decided to make a move to the Terminal City Rollergirls.  “I joined fresh meat in the fall of  2009, and was drafted to the FPC in early 2010.”  She explains that it was the “biggest regular draft to date, with 17 rookies being drafted to FPC."  However, things have changed over the years, and FPC has completely transformed, with only a few of the original Kitties left.

When asked how she feels about being Captain this season, that Cheshire grin returns, “I genuinely love coaching and being a leader.”  It helps that she considers herself “organized and a great listener,” important assets when leading a team. However she also admits her weakness: “I’m a great listener unless there are snacks in front of me. Then I'm still organized, but you might have to repeat yourself."

The story behind her derby name relates to this admitted enthusiasm for snacks. “Tikis are temperamental deities that need to be appeased with offerings of food. I see that lifestyle as a potential retirement plan.”  There is no real need to explain the latter part, as if you haven’t seen her on the track yet, your next chance to watch this explosion of speed and energy zip and weave through stunned opponents is this Friday at the Terminal City Rollergirls Season Opener!

Tiki couldn’t be more excited about the upcoming game and season with TCRG, especially since she spent the better part of last year missing practices, working nights and weekends, and going to school during the day (developing her Computer Whisperer skills). Because of that crazy schedule, she had to make the tough choice to quit the TCRG All-Stars.  She admits, “it was definitely hard, but now I'm really looking forward to building the bond with my new teammates, and immersing myself in the FPC culture of cross-training, potlucks, and impeccable grammar.

Other than the already mentioned fun facts about FPC, we asked Tiki why the girls in black and purple should be your favorites this upcoming year?  She proudly responds, “Everyone cheered for the FPC when we were the underdogs and had never won a game because we were always gracious and had big smiles on our faces. Now everyone still cheers for us, because we're still always gracious and have big smiles on our faces. The roster may change, but the heart of the team stays the same. We keep it classy... and we have really nice bums."

Agreed.
