Meet the Pussycats - Venom S Kiss #J9

by Evada Peron

The 2012 season is approaching, so it's time to introduce the newest, fiercest members of your favorite team, the Faster Pussycats!  We have been sharpening our claws in preparation for another season and scratching up the flat track in excitement to introduce some of our newest kittehs.

If you haven’t already heard of Venom S Kiss, well now is the time!  We are thrilled to have her on the roster and we know you will love her just as much as we do.  Here is just a taste of the ridiculous awesomeness that is Venom:

Name & Number: Venom S Kiss #J9
Position(s): All of them
Best Quality: Biggest heart of gold
Worst Quality: Distracted by shiny things
Lucky Charm: Hemp bracelet from her derby fiancée, Roll-Her Bones.
Super Power: Facial Intensity

Venom joined TCRG's Fresh Meat in 2010.  She trained hard for several months but unfortunately didn’t get drafted to a house team.  She will be the first to confess that she was surprised at the amount of athleticism involved in the sport of derby, admitting that “I thought I had good stamina before I joined, but soon found out...I wasn't ready.”  Although disappointed, this kitty refused to hang up her skates: “When I had been cut from the team, I stuck to skating on my own and with my derby fiancée, Roll-Her Bones (from TCRG’s Riot Girls). We skated the seawall throughout the summer of 2011 and when the chance came to join the new Fresh Meat batch again that fall, I was all over it!”  Following her second season of Fresh Meat, the Faster Pussycats took notice of not only her determination, but also her passion for the sport and feisty style on skates, and now she’s proud member of the Pussycats.

Along with her obvious skills, Venom has also introduced a new concept that the FPC have been very excited to integrate into their game.  What is it?  Well, her secret super power…Facial Intensity!  Venom laughs as she explains how this skill came about: “One day while playing Rock Em' Sock Em' Robots with a fellow Pussycat, the opposition was becoming quite vocal, and the only match for that vocal intensity was to shoot back with some facial intensity!”  Still confused?  Venom breaks it down even further: “It’s basically your ‘ten times stronger face'.  Just take a look in the mirror and give it a shot!” She smiles and assures that “you'll feel the intensity in the room go up!  You’re welcome.”

As the season opener grows nearer, Venom is excited to skate with her new team, and compete against the other TCRG House Teams.  The smile on her face grows wider as she discusses the FPC’s pre-season bout against the Riot Girls, and she reveals she’s very excited to have the chance “to play against and with friends, and especially against my derby fiancé, Roll-Her Bones.”

In terms of what she will bring to the track, Venom believes she provides the FPC with some strong hits and the ability to break up opposing walls of skaters.  She is also confident in her knack for building solid walls with her teammates to trap “some mice to eat.”

This season, when she’s not on the track, you most likely will catch Venom somewhere outdoors.  As a lover of local bands and music, Venom enjoys soaking in the rhythms of a drum circle that happens every Tuesday at Third Beach and, if weather permits, a skate around the Seawall with friends.  Also, Venom recently became a member of a mixed martial arts studio in East Vancouver.  She explains, “I'm a huge fan of MMA and if I wasn't playing roller derby, I would be fighting.”  Even though she doesn’t have the time commitment for both sports, fans will definitely see Venom's martial arts training reflected in her aggressive and competitive moves on the flat track.

When asked why fans should cheer for the Faster Pussycats, Venom responds the way any derby enthusiast would: “Fans should cheer for good roller derby!  The Faster Pussycats are planing on bringing it, but so are all the other TCRG house teams.”  Venom is confident that once fans have an understanding of the sport and fall in love with the game as much as she has, they should cheer for the great plays, strategy and the hard working athletes who make up the Terminal City Rollergirls.

Keep up with Venom by checking out her athlete page on Facebook.
